This work was completed in 1990 and may be regarded as the greatest and most complex composition in Simeon ten Holt’s oeuvre. In the introduction to the score the composer writes: “All the layers are equally important and they alternately assume the roles of main issue and side issue, of dominance and subtlety, principal colour and secondary colour, soloist and silence.”

Occasionally Rondane Quartet performes this piece in cooperation with the Amstel Quartet. The combination of four grand pianos and four saxophones works remarkably well.
