UITVERKOCHT

The Huygens Festival is proud to present Simeon ten Holt´s Lemniscaat performed on four grand pianos by Rondane Kwartet.

Lemniscaat was completed in 1983 and is the first composition for four keyboard instruments that Simeon ten Holt wrote after Canto Ostinato. The composer defines the refrain as an invocation which is characterized by very long sounding chords contrasting with the restless movement of the sixteenth notes in the intervening episodes. Now and again impressive melodies develop from the minimalist structures. Simeon ten Holt once compared Lemniscaat to a toccata because of its capricious nature and virtuosity.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Anna van Nieukerken is temporarily replacing Daphne Keune.

During a performance the grand pianos are positioned in a cross shape formation. The pianists use specific signs to communicate and therefore it’s necessary their faces are turned towards each other. Owing to the substantial liberty of action every performance will be a musical adventure for both the pianists as the audience.
